Realtor from Vienna, Va., Wins National Award for her story as a Vietnamese immigrant who founded Devotion to Children Nonprofit & Award Video

Fairfax, VA (Dec 5, 2014) – Rosemary Tran Lauer, a REALTOR® with Long & Foster Real Estate, has been named as one of five winners of the National Association of Realtors® for REALTORÒ Magazine’s 2014 Good Neighbor Award, one of the most prominent awards bestowed upon NAR members.  NAR includes more than one million members across the country involved in all aspects of the residential and commercial real estate industries.

The winners of this year’s Good Neighbor Awards are a perfect example of Realtors®’ dedication to building successful neighborhoods and serving those most in need,” said NAR President Steve Brown, broker/owner of Irongate, Inc. Realtors® in Dayton, Ohio. “As we celebrate the 15th year of the Good Neighbor Awards, I am proud to honor the impact that Rosemary’s passion and goodwill have had on the lives of children and parents in her community.”

Rosemary Tran Lauer founded the Devotion to Children (DTC) nonprofit in 1994 to fund childcare so low-income parents can work or continue their education in order to break the cycle of poverty.  She knows first-hand the challenges of being a single parent, having fled Vietnam in 1975 to come to the United States with two young children under the age of 3.  Tran Lauer settled in Washington, D.C., where she lived in a rundown efficiency apartment, working three jobs to make ends meet. She left her children with neighbors, who were virtual strangers, because she had no other option.

Rosemary Tran Lauer climbed her way out of poverty, which spawned her desire to form DTC and help other families avoid the challenges still prevalent with finding quality, affordable daycare today. “It’s painful to see people going though that now,” Tran Lauer says. Now in its 20th year, DTC brings in about $200,000 annually, largely through three events: A Mother’s Day run that’s in its fifth year and draws more than 1,100 participants, a poker night and their signature “Red, Heart & Soul” dinner gala. Since 2006, Tran Lauer estimates DTC’s grants have helped more than 3,000 children.

Aside from her work with DTC, Rosemary also serves on the Board of Northern Virginia Family Services (NVFS), Jade Philanthropy Society and is on the Board of Advisors for United Bank and the Vietnamese Realtor Forum.

The NAR Good Neighbor Awards recognizes REALTORS® who have made an extraordinary impact on their community, or on the national or world stage, through volunteer work.  Five winners are announced each fall in REALTOR® Magazine. Winners are recognized annually at the REALTORS® Conference & Expo, and receive $10,000 grants for their charities. Winners also receive travel expenses to the conference and national and local media exposure for their community cause. In addition to the winners, five honorable mentions each receive a $2,500 grant.

Tran Lauer was honored by the NAR REALTOR® Magazine Good Neighbor Awards program at the NAR General Assembly in New Orleans, Louisiana on November 8, 2014.  Devotion to Children was awarded $10,000 and a crystal trophy from NAR.

In addition to being awarded the NAR Good Neighbor Award, this year, Tran Lauer was awarded the “Non-Profit Leadership Award” from Leadership Fairfax.  She was also one of the honorees for  “VA Most Influential Women of 2014” by Virginia Lawyers Media.  In 2014 Tran Lauer has been featured on the Executive Leaders Radio Program, Cox Local Edition, WUSA-9, Voice of Vietnam Americans, and NBC-4.  To read Tran Lauer's full story and watch her video, go to
